Back to Basics: Being More Happy

Robyn Mayday style blog
Well, another couple of weeks have flown by, but I've got a bright little outfit for ya. A bit of a rarity from my wardrobe. Plus, a few thoughts around how I'm focusing on being more happy.

I completely admit I've been a grouch the past few weeks. Literally, call me Oscar... and someone buy me this kids outfit. For me, it's not hard to get into what I'd deem a 'pessimistic-mind-rut', but it's pretty challenging to get out of it. I'll put on chipper chops mode when needed, but really I'm feeling pretty, well, mediocre. So here's some thoughts that help me snap out of moping Robyn mode. Lets get deep(ish).

I can't do everything.

I'm making headway with this one actually. This one mostly suits my work mode, but it's true outside of that too. I am only one person (at least, I think so), so I have limits. I need to be honest about those limits and know where to push them and where to reign it in. One of the things bothering me recently is that we moved into our new house nearly a year ago now (holy guacamole). But, we haven't actually decorated at all.
I'm trying to let this one go as realistically, we're going to be here for years, so it's not something we need to do right now. We've also got money in other places. And in all honesty, choosing colours of paint sounds easy, but this is me (seriously indecisive about menial things) it's going to take a lonnnng time!

I'm in a good place.

By this, I mean I have everything I could need. A house, a car (albeit, with a huge cracker of a dent in it), a boyfriend, a dog, my family... the list goes on. Again, thinking about the small problems that might crop up day to day in context helps. Although it can be easy to get thrown in the moment. Thinking about these things makes the shit that gets me down seem insanely trivial to what a lot of other people have to deal with.

I need to do what's right for me.

Even if I don't want to admit it's the right thing, or it might not be the right thing for other people. I'm not someone who necessarily makes impulsive decisions anyway. But a few years back, I wouldn't make a decision or do something for me, it was always for someone else. This is where blogging has helped me out, because it's something I do for myself.
Decisions shouldn't always be selfish. But there are times when they have to be.

I should push my boundaries.

Some of the happiest times I've experienced have been when I've done something that I wasn't actually sure about. This fits tiny choices (like choosing a different curry, because I feel like I'm a as risky as a malted milk biscuit when it comes to curry. I kid you not), right up to massive life changing decisions, like getting a dog.
I knew Bowie would be a lot of work (the biggest understatement of my short-ish life 😂) and that made me question getting a puppy. But it's been a life experience, shall we say, including a very sorry end for my skirting boards, and I wouldn't have things any different now!
So I need to keep on creating and taking on new and different challenges. Because even though they might not seem like the most obvious route to a happy outcome, you've got to take an educated risk at times. You might find a really good curry too. And wearing orange is definitely breaking boundaries for me! And the sales of fake tan generated by a single person (me).

There we have it. I already feel a bit better for writing this post actually and getting my brainwaves into a few hundred characters. How do you guys get your minds back on track when you've been in a not-so-happy rut?

Velvet + Metallics: Things I Want

With Autumn coming our way, some of my fave cold-weather trends have crept back in. Namely, velvet and metallics. There are some seriously fab pieces around at my favourite spots (New Look are killing it right now! As are ASOS... as ever... and Misguided).

I am all over a good metallic. Glitter or shiny fabrics, I'm there (in moderation, not planning to look like the International Space Station). Silver is my thing right now, so I snapped up these silver flared heel boots as soon as I saw them at New Look. I spotted this amazing little silver real leather rucksack too, which I am literally in love with. But managed to avoid adding it to my basket somehow!

In aid of actually looking slightly space-y, I'm also loving this space cadet sequin jumper from ASOS. the slogan is literally just like the House of Holland sweater that would set you back a huge£150. I'm down with saving £120 odd quid. But admittedly if I had the cash, I'd be all over that Holland bad boy.

Onto velvet. I've had a bit of a love hate relationship with velvet. Anyone in their 20s (or 30s?) probably remembers the wonder of velour tracksuits back in the day *shudders*. However, I've got over velvet induced sickness by buying some velvet boots a few months back when they were on sale and now I'm well into it. The simple and autumnal vibe of these ASOS velvet trainers is perfect for the current weather. Love a good platform, being relatively short!

Branching out a bit in the realms of velvet to this sassy pink Misguided bomber. This baby looks super snug and I love that it's so bold. Paired with metallic accessories, this would be incredible. And finally, a velvet bralet from New Look. I can imagine this being perfect under a loose blouse, or even a fine knit jumper. Not quite ready to venture into velvet knickers yet though...

Let me know what you're loving!

What even is a 'Girly' Girl Anyway?

As lover of clothes from the boys section, a bit of Playstation and being quite the slob, I've never been the poster girl for traditional femininity. But scarily, approaching my mid 20s, I find myself questioning if I'm 'girly' enough. Inspired by the fierce lady that is Megs over at Wonderful You in her post this week, I wanted to share my own thoughts on why it's ok to be you, even if that means getting an Action Man for Christmas (... read on!). And use my sociology degree for the first time (jokes.)

As long as I can remember, I've found a way to fall outside of the traditional stereotype of 'girl' in some way or another. Yes, I had long blonde hair and did my fair share of ballet classes (rocking a tutu as a little chunky monkey toddler. I then fell over in tap class and it was game over. Leotards were also vile). But I certainly had some quirks worth sharing, which probably help to explain why I'm the person I am now.

So here are some bits of my life thus far in ode of not being the stereotype of 'girl'.
(Disclaimer: there's nothing wrong with being a girly-ass-sasspot through and through. More power to you. Keep reading. I just wanted to share a bit of my life with ya!)

Playgroup Robyn

I was always the dog in the whole make-pretend shiz. Never the mum and never ever the person getting married. The dog. Lols. And that's what I wanted to be.

Starting School Robyn

I was the girl who wore Clarks boys shoes, because I didn't want butterflies and fancy things adorning my feet. The chunky sole was pretty cool and they were comfy. Fast-forward to today and I'm almost the same. Ain't gunna catch me in no ballet pump, although I'm all over a sassy heel.

When Barbies Were Cool Robyn

I asked for an Action Man for Christmas. He had cool buttons and a gun (not an advocate, I just preferred it to Barbie's handbag). He could do shit, beyond having some bend to his limbs. Barbie had less fun things going for her and strangely angled feet.

Mid-School-Aged Robyn

I was super into games. I'd sit on the top bunk bed and watch my dad play on terrifying PC games until midnight and my eyes felt like they were going to fall out of my head. I also rocked a Tomb Raider t-shirt and used to pretend I was Ash Ketchum from Pokemon in our back garden 👍

Just Before Secondary School Robyn

Boyfriends were stupid. I'd never had one and none of the boys fancied me. I got the guts one day to ask a boy out when I was 11 and he said no. That sucked, because my friends really wanted me to have a boyfriend (I wasn't fussed, but thought it would probably make me a bit more normal).

I did get one just before I left my school in year six, but it didn't work out because I bought him some sherbert as a present and decided I'd eat myself it instead of giving it to him. It wasn't much of a loss.

High School Robyn

Being 'girlier' or just more similar to other girls helped me fit into a new school, where everyone thought I was Australian. Apparently coming from near the M25, having a non-local accent and having a Nike bag as a girl (oh and having B cup boobs aged 12) made me basically exotic and pretty weird.

Boyfriends, makeup, MSN and falling out with my best friends every week became my daily drill. I was shy though and sleepovers, parties or discos used to make me feel disgustingly anxious.

University Robyn

When I started my blog at uni, it was in aid of being creative and finding a kind of second outlet where people 'got' me. I was genuinely embarrassed when some of my uni pals found out about it, as blogging wasn't a common thing at the time. I'm not great at establishing really deep friendships very often either so it probably made me the oddball amongst the group. It wasn't a big problem for me though, as I can be a bit of a lone wolf.

At this point, I wasn't just sticking to boy's school shoes, you'll be pleased to know. Through blogging I'd become more confident in expressing my own style. Even repping tops with bananas on - yep it happened. This went down a treat with some at a reasonably elite uni where flip flops in winter were all the rage... (internet sarcasm)

Right Now Robyn

I still favour an oversized tee over a skin-tight top. Although sorry Lara Croft... I won't be repping you on my garms anymore. But I also opt for a mini skirt and a false lash (or two) some days. I do wonder from time to time whether my style or persona creates the perception of 'not making an effort' as woman. I hate that the thought crosses my mind.

Yes, I'll rep a 'girly' look if I'm feeling like it. I'm agile in my femininity - or simply, I make my own decisions. And I shouldn't even spend two seconds thinking about other people's perceptions of me (I need to work on that fo sho). I didn't think twice aged six about my boys shoes. And the word 'tomboy' wouldn't have even crossed my mind.

I'm not thinking about having kids, or getting married any time soon. Hell, I don't know if either would be for me. But who knows what I'll decide do or how I'll feel tomorrow...

...

Alas, I am a girl (or woman? Am I at Britney life-stage cira 2001?). So I'm going to take it upon myself to question how Pokemon, boys shoes (in particular the 90s Clarks variety) and not being faffed about a big white dress makes me any less girly. I guess I've just always considered myself to have some non-'feminine' quirks. Jesus, this has turned a little philosophical and dichotomous (I knew the sociologist in me would make an appearance).

Anyway, enough about my life stories. I'd love to hear about you. Did you love Pokemon *HANDS OFF MY SILVER CHARIZARD* or wear boys clothes, or simply not give a damn about the whole shebang? Share your thoughts and feelings too!

Making smart casj and casj smart since... well whenever they were invented. I'm a sucker for a tie-front garm. They're contemporary, yet timeless and a bit interesting. Admittedly, they do seem to cause confusion. I still wear this River Island tie sleeve dress three years on (ok, it isn't looking it's best anymore) and to this day it continues to spark conversation.

"Is that a skirt?", "how does that work?" and even "what are you wearing over you dress...?". But I love it as much as I did the day I bought it. So when I clocked this simple grey tee in New Look, for a steal at £8.99 may I add, it had to get in my wardrobe.

UK fashion blogger

This New Look t-shirt has quickly made it's way into my regular work-wear. Loving it with a pair of skinnies and a choker. But it would work just as well with a pair of culottes and trainers. Yes to versatility!

After a quick scour of the web I picked out some of my fave tie-front pieces you can buy right now. From a dreamy Whistles jumper to a tailored shirt at Topshop, through to loungewear from ASOS. I literally want it all 🙊.

Daisy street boots

Also, a big old shout out to these fierce Daisystreet boots from ASOS. So. Obsessed. I have a thing for pointy boots - evidenced here too, with some amazing M&S cowboy-worthy ones. I've seen a few bloggers favouriting them and can confirm they are pretty darn comfy even though they'd best fit a large slice of Dairylee (first triangular thing that came to mind). The stud gold stud detail makes them even better 👌. I can also confirm they're excellent implements for Monday's. TO KICK ASS. Ok. Leave me alone... I'm trying to feel positive about waking up at 5am tomorrow!

House of Holland Vibes On a Budget

House of Holland style

When I spotted this House of Holland sweater I totally fell in love with it. But not wanting to splurge right now, I quickly found this way cheaper ASOS Space Cadet sequin adorned alternative that had to be mine. I came across this £28 beauty hunting on ASOS (as you do) and I featured it in my Velvet and Metallics post a few weeks back.

This sequin-adorned look-alike jumper inspired me to have a hunt for some more Holland-esque pieces. From bold knits at Topshop and metallic boots at River Island, unique partywear at ASOS, to shiny shoes at Miss Selfridge... there's a whole hoard of affordable stuff out there to channel the right vibes.

I'm SO obsessed with this pink sequin frill dress by ASOS, as well as literally every single pair of heeled boots from Topshop right now. They are killing it! However, these Hooch velvet platform boots from Topshop are my absolute faves. These + some flared cropped jeans would be dreamy!

blogger east midlands

Now, usually I'm all about boots... as some of you may have noticed. But my second footwear fave is the faithful trainer. Here I'm wearing Adidas Court Vantages. I found this style whilst hunting for some Stan Smiths and noticed they were a) cheaper and b) a nicer shape - to me at least. These feel more modern and I like how the branding on them isn't hugely visible. They're made of super soft leather, so are ridiculously comfortable.

I'd totally style this jumper out with boots and jeans equally, of course. Also, I noticed today that it looks like there's a sale at House of Holland right now... across pretty much everything. *GULP*. If I wasn't paying my car insurance this month (blergh!) I totally would have snapped something up! Worth a look. I apologise in advance for any unforeseen purchases that may occur 😏

Now, I don't wear dresses that often. But this one is something special. This bargain £19.99 LBD from New Look is an absolute cracker. With a nod to the choker trend and a simple, flattering style, it's just what I need in my wardrobe for the festive season! ie. perfect for skimming a cheese and wine filled belly... or any other Christmassy treat - I'm open to it all 😏. Whilst being easily paired with any shoes or accessories.

I nabbed the boots in the Free People sale a few months back - they're literally the BEST shoes I've ever bought. Reduced to about £40 from over £150, I was pretty damn impressed with that find. Seriously though, they are the most comfortable shoes I've ever owned. Totally going to have to check out the Free People for more shoes soon! Having looked there's some amazing boots on there right now.. well worth a cheeky browse. Or an add to your Christmas list (it's not that far off... eeek!).

Doing Double Leopard Print: 3 Ways to Make it Easier

wearing double leopard print

The cold weather brings with it some wonderful stuff. Snug nights in, crisp leaves, hot chocolate... and leopard print. Ok, so a slight jump there. But it is the ultimate Autumn / Winter print! So I've been thinking of how can I can wear more of it.  And to go the extra mile for this post, I'm not just wearing double leopard print. Yes - that's triple leopard print. Uh huh.

Frill Detail Jumper - New Look
Flare Cropped Jeans - H&M (similar at ASOS)
Cut Out Boots - old Topshop ones!
(love these River Island ones though)

how to wear a leopard print coat
Black ruffle jumper

1) Don't be scared!

Help yourself out on this one and just go with it. Seriously. In my eyes, as long as the rest of the outfit is relatively simple you could go wild and try quadruple leopard or even further (if you can find enough to wear. It is pretty bloody cold so I'm sure that's possible!). Even if you've got some other fancy details in your outfit (like the frilled top I'm wearing from New Look) there's no reason why you shouldn't add some bold prints.

2. Think accessories.

Planning out how to wear a leopard top and coat could be a bit stressful. It would be for me at least. But if you've got a few accessories with animal print, that's a far easier route. Try a bag, like the one I'm wearing here from Love My Soul, with some leopard boots (I'm in mine all the time!). I've picked out some sweet leopard print accessories below to get you thinking.

Robyn Mayday blog

3. Consider colour.

Finally, take it easy with colours if you're a newbie, or are looking to wear multiple printed items. I love classic leopard colours, so I happen to have a few accessories that pair well together tonally. There are loads of bright and bold leopard prints incredible though. I just haven't got in on the full spectrum of shades quite yet!

So, don't get too caught up in pairing perfectly. For me, I quite like a bit of a disjointed look. Matching the tones of your print can help to bring everything together though - and accessories are a fail safe option if you want to wear double leopard. Now I'm off to buy some more animal print. I cannot get enough of it!

radley kennington

So, it's just over a week until Christmas... yes a week. How terrifying, but equally exciting! To add to my festive excitement, I received this amazing little gift from Radley the other week - the Kennington Mini Domed Grab Bag. And the verdict: I'm seriously besotted! They weren't wrong when they said good things come in small packages.

Keep going out of stock! But ASOS have loads of other options

It is absolutely the perfect size. Not only is it the ideal proportions, but there's a zip pocket inside and a pouch on the back, making it a go-to bag for getting out and about. Although my massive (and I mean MASSIVE) purse won't fit in here, I've been popping my card and pennies in with no worries as it's got a sturdy zip.

As it's sweet and simple, it matches literally any outfit too, which is amazing! There's a hint of cream leather along the zip - a really cute detail, along with the classic Radley dog detailing. Needless to say the quality is fab. If you haven't sussed all your Christmas list quite yet, seriously consider popping a request in for this little beauty. There's loads more to choose from over at Radley too.

I'm loving frills still (obvs!) and wearing this New Look jumper again. I'm yet to invest in any other frilled tops as I thought this could be a one hit wonder, but has grown on me a lot - I've been wearing it every week since I bought it! Maybe in the Jan sales... let's face it, they'll start next week anyway!

Also came across these silver hooped chain earrings a few days ago, they're by a brand called DesignB via ASOS. They're a bargain in the sale at £5 - but they're my new faves! I love simple, slightly alternative jewellery, so these hit the mark with me. Paired with my (oldie but favie) bold silver ring, they make a cracking pair.

So, there's some fabulous accessories and frills for you! Please do share with me your fashion / beauty Christmas wishlists... why can't pay day be sooner eh?! Time to collate my final Christmas requests and get cracking on my sale shopping list! Maybe I'll post about that next week...

Velvet Puffer Jacket 101

new years party outfit

Ok. We need to talk about this coat. Yes, it's a velvet puffer coat (- or is it puffa?!). And it's potentially the best highstreet find... ever. Coming across a Stella McCartney style jacket for less than 10% of the designer price is a pretty bloody exciting thing, is it not?! I know, I know... velvet isn't everyone's cup of tea. So, if you're not sold, read on to find out why you need a velvet puffa in your life too.

Velvet Puffer Coat - Next
Sequin Crop Top - River Island (old)
Love this sequin polo in the sale now at River Island!
Leather Look Skirt - New Look
Gold Metallic Boots - Urban Outfitters

1: Wear it smart or casj

Pair that velvet puffer with ripped jeans, or the most insanely sequined top and it will still look awesome. If you're like me and opt for casual outfits a lot, a velvet jacket is a handy piece of outerwear to jazz up your look. Equally, it tops off formal outfits perfectly - totally work friendly. I've added some amazing Urban Outfitters metallic gold boots to my outfit here, as I'm still all over velvet / metallic combos!

2: Designer vibes for a steal

As I mentioned in the intro, my velvet puffer dreams were born when I spotted this £1.5k Stella McCartney piece. However, my budget was less than a tenth of that. So coming across this velvet beauty at Next for a reasonable £95 was a pretty sweet moment. It 's also available in a range of fits, including petite (just what I needed!). Realistically, I can't imagine wading around in that insanely long Stella number. I'd be a walking duvet. A gorgeous, expensive, cosy duvet though. I've picked out some more styles below from a range of retailers too.

velvet puffer coat

3: Switching up the classic puffa

We're all loving the padded jacket trend - a round two ode to the Michelin man, if you will. But this super soft fabric steers it away from the typical 90s vibe, to have a more vintage feel. Apparently, Lyst tracked puffa jacket sales had sky rocketed by 280% back in October (needless to say, likely even more now). So make sure you stand out in your puffa, girl 💁

4: It's a snuggle magnet

Hilariously, and rather awkwardly, people want to come up to you and cuddle you all the time. Whilst wearing this bad boy, you're a human shaped pillow. A baby soft one at that. So prepare yourself for all the hugs. I'm really not kidding about this. If you don't want people asking to feel your coat, this ain't for you.

5: Erm. It's VELVET?!

Is there a fabric more seasonal than velvet? I think not. Also, if you're not down with velvet tops or leggings because they can end up a little clammy (let's be honest), a coat is a great option.  And if you're not already all over velvet, please let this be your first dip into it's soft, ...velvety?!... world.

Let me know if I've convinced you to join my soft and squishy coat clan, or if you've got one already. Going to be donning this sassy number all the way through to spring! Thanks Next for creating this absolute dream of a jacket 🙌

Oh hi January 1st 2017. How did you happen?! They weren't lying when they said the older you get, the quicker the years pass by. I'm not much of the reminiscing type (if that's a thing), but I wanted share with you some of my plans for the next 364 days. From a new job, to blog plans and more - let's make it good one! Oh and please enjoy this whimsical photo of me.

I turn 25

Yep, imma be a quarter of a century old. I'm not feeling negative about it in the slightest - actually, I'm pretty pleased that and feel I've got my shit (relatively) together. However, I do feel like it should be a marker for something. I'm not sure what this could be yet, but we'll see after March 9th (*nudge nudge* birthday cards... and maybe a new car welcome 😁)

I remember at school, we were asked in class what age we wanted to be when we had kids - we were probably in year 10. Good old PSHE - I'm sure any British kids have fond memories of those lessons. Everyone held up those little whiteboards (lols) with ages ranging from 21-28. I scrawled '27' on mine. It's mental to think I'm only 2 years away from that now. Life seriously creeps up on you! My mind couldn't be any further from babies right now. Unless of the furry type. Anyway. I'm keenly awaiting to see what being 25 brings, if anything!

Starting a new job

I'm excited (and nervous) to be making a move in my career in 2017.  The role is still in marketing and full time, as I've been doing since leaving uni in 2013, but in a completely new sector. Although I was promoted in my current job recently, I just have a real gut feeling that this is the right move for me. It really feels right.

I'm seriously sad about leaving my current work pals behind, having made some really incredible friends over the past 2ish years. I've also got to work closely with some of my favourite brands, which has been cool. But it's time something different. A new challenge. It's a great company too with some awesome benefits, like a free gym on site... taking us nicely onto my next point!

Being healthy

Ah, that New Year classic: health and fitness. 2016 was a shocking year for my health generally. I think I recall going to the gym maybe about 8 times... *gulp*. My eating habits haven't been that great either. Convenience and cravings sum up my consumption over the past year. In 2015 I was ridiculously on it with my health. Gymming 3-4 times a week and taking time to consider what I was putting into my body. This year, I've been chucking all the chocolate bars, cans of coke and packs of crisps down my neck. It's been fun, but long-term health-wise it ain't gonna cut it.

I'm going to chill in Jan and Feb while I settle into my new job. Then my focus will be to ensure that sometime around March I'm happy with my new routine of food and fitness. Updates to come I'm sure! I love buying gym clothes... I just rarely use them. So it's time to get my sweat on again. Yum.

Get wiser with my dollar

As per the previous paragraph, disgustingly guilty of spending money when I don't need to. Ie. do I really need that sports bra when I haven't gone to the gym for a month? Do I really need 3 pairs of those (wonderfully gorgeous) Topshop boots... surely one pair will suffice!? Do you REALLY need a Deliveroo for the fourth week in a row. No - no Robyn. You don't.

I'm lucky that I have enough money coming in each month to live off, with a little spare to spend as I like. This year, I want to make more considered choices with it. There are bigger things that I want to save for.

Doing our house up is something I'm super eager to get cracking with. It's one of the first things on my list to start investing in now. Time to snap out of impulse purchasing and put my cards back in my wallet. Sorry ASOS and my Mastercard's other bessies, like Just Eat and anywhere that sells coffee. We'll see how long it lasts though. Given I went a bit wild in Primark and Topshop only yesterday. But hey, that was technically last year, right?!

Work harder at my blog

I still love blogging. A lot. Although, I've written before about why blogging isn't as easy as it may seem. Taking some great photos or writing a few paragraphs is just 20% of it. And right now, I'm not taking the time to really make what I am doing valuable. I'm not really doing the other 80% of the work on my blog that I'd like to do - if that makes any sense. Time is a big constraint. But I'd like to know your hacks to making blogging easier, or generally more time efficient! So please share any tips or posts with me.

Staying connected

Both in my digital and real life, I'm sometimes a bit shit at keeping in touch with people. As easy as sending a quick message to someone, or leaving a comment on a blog might seem, it's not been at the forefront of my mind over the past few months. I really hate to think things like this might take a backseat because of work, tiredness, or pure laziness - let's face it, I totally sit on the sofa like a sack of spuds a binge watch Man Vs Food some Saturdays.

I want people to know I value them - whether that's by me reciprocating a sweet comment on my blog, or instigating a conversation with an old pal. Side note: I met up with an amazing friend from college when I was at home in December and it was seriously wonderful.

Rifling though digital content is how I spend a lot of my spare time. Reading fantastically witty, engaging and honest ramblings, or watching super helpful Youtube vids - I spend hours doing it! There's so much goodness out there. It's weird to think I don't bother to leave many comments on my internet ventures. They're so so nice to receive and it only takes a few seconds to do. So note to self, take an extra 30 seconds to leave a nice comment back!

Note: I'm so sorry if you've left me any unreciprocated comments over the past few months! I will get better at this, I promise.

That's a good note to end on I think. It sounds uber cheesy, but New Year really is about considering how to do things better. And I think getting older (it's inevitable!), a new job, making my health a priority, being less impulsive with my money, utilising my blog better and staying connected with people are all going to be key for me in making the next 364 days a success. Not 365, as today doesn't count. Especially if I get a McDonalds for tea.

Get ready to vom at this cliche, but let's raise a glass - albeit of water, if you're feeling worse for ware today... or easier still, a metaphorical glass - to a successful year. And remember, even if things go to pot and Mc Donalds happens a bit too much, just make sure you bloody enjoy it!

Frills: 4 Takes on the Trend You'll Want to Wear

black ruffled jumper

Frills. Ruffles. Whatever you want to call them, I'm ridiculously into them right now. Ruffles have been filling my favourite high-street and online shops since late last 2016. Replicating some of the frilly and exaggerated trims seen on catwalks, with far more affordable price tags. Fast forward to spring and frills are still set to be a key trend. Thank the fashion people - as I can't be bothered with one-season wonders.

Wearing: Frill trim jumper from New Look

In preperation for wearing ruffles even more over the next few months, I've compiled a few different takes on the trend I'm into right now. As well as all forms of frills featuring on 85% of my Instagram feed. You'd literally think the algorithm was based on the size of sleeves and amounts of excess material on trousers right now. Thanks to some of my best internet pals (namely ASOS, Topshop, Boohoo, Mango, and Office) I've found some budget-friendly and mid-range options that are well worth checking out.

1. The frilled blouse

Kicking this OTT fabric party off is a year round classic for all occasions - the blouse. I'm loving frilled blouses for work or weekends. They're perfect paired with jeans (my fave right now are ASOS Farleigh jeans) and equally cool with a midi or mini skirt. I'm all over the bold and brash meeting of animal print with the frill trend - this £14 Boohoo leopard frill blouse is insanely cool. And this transitional Mango check blouse is ideal for this time of year.

2. Gingham, gingham, gingham.

As a general lover of gingham, I cannot deal with combo of gingham and ruffles. In a good way. There are so many great examples of this right now, particularly this Topshop gingham jacket and matching frilled shorts. Yes, a GINGHAM RUFFLED SHORT SUIT. Although, admittedly, not the cheapest pieces in this post... just imagine it paired with a plain white shirt or band tee. Now tell me you don't want to eat soup until pay day hits to buy it.

3. Ruffled leather

Comparable to marmite is a bit of flounce on a leather good. Probably repulsive to some, but personally, I'm all a frill on anything. And that includes shoes and bags. These Office ruffled boots are total J.W.Anderson dupes that I'm in serious danger of buying. They could be such a timeless option (and they're almost half price right now!). Also mega obsessed with this Topshop ruffle bag. All black + ruffles = one sassy bag.

4. Better than basic basics

Add a frill or two to basic and that's something special right there. Being honest, I'm a fan of chilling in joggers on the weekend. But how good would I feel about wearing joggers with a stream of ruffles down each side? The answer: I'd feel pretty fucking fabulous. I'm also a big fan of all the frill-trimmed t-shirts at Boohoo, a cheap and simple nod to frilling up. Beyond classic jersey items, try Topshop's ruffle hemmed trousers (these ones are big blogger news right now and just £24) or even frayed frills on the back of a denim jacket (seriously, Topshop are nailing this trend!).

And that's it. All my favourite flouncy buys in one place. And in the course of compiling this, it would seem that I've just managed to buy myself enough ruffles to grace a whole team of real-life flamenco ladies 💃💃💃💃- don't pretend you're not impressed. And if you're genuinely not, well... at least I'm getting more material for my money over here 💁.

What's your fave take on the frill trend? Loving ruffled leather? Or grabbing all the gingham you can get your hands on? Let me know!

Blogging In 2012 vs Now: 5 Years Since Disco Pants and 'Shit' Pics

(Not so) fresh from the Robyn Mayday archives, I've extracted some of the highlights of blogging circa 2012.  And it's all because this week five years ago, I started a blog. There are some cracking trends and changes we need to talk and laugh about!

At almost twenty years old, I was bored by Tumblr, a bit 'meh' about my degree and inspired by up and coming bloggers of the time (think LLYMLRS, Beautycrush etc.). So, *cue mystical music and smoke machine* let's take it back to a time when disco pants clad the legs of bloggers, my photos were, admittedly, shit and I wore pastel green jeans (please assess this look at the end of the post. Serious lols. You're gonna love'em).

Basically, you weren't a blogger in 2012 if you didn't have these...

Please note, I'm aware many bloggers may have never had any of these. It's all in good humour. Cos bloggers need to laugh at themselves too. Hopefully, you can relate.

Disco pants; the shiny sausage trousers

All that sheen, all that constriction. They were the trousers we couldn't get enough of. I actually don't have anything against these babies today (they're ugly-pretty, so still in my good books. I would just rather be comfortable and not feel permanently ready to burst). Here's a wonderful post of me wearing some eye-catching silver buggers. And yes, they still exist. Although, American Apparel is now a thing of the past in the UK. Yes, things have changed THAT MUCH since 2012.

We didn't just do disco pants in black, no. That would be boring. We wore the most exotic colours and brash shades. I remember bloggers leading the way with these. My 'weird shiny trousers' soon became the most sought after thing for your legs to be seen in. I hope any left over fabric / American Apparel skips filled with these are being repurposed into solar panels somewhere in the world. What even was that fabric anyway?! And why were they so expensive?

Asos Farleigh Jeans

Litas: the world's ugliest shoe?

(or Hellbounds by UNIF, if you were edgier)

I quote this title from the highly respected Daily Mail. I won't even bother to link to that (soz). I genuinely loved my Litas. They were comfortable and a bit weird and were my go to 'going out' shoe for most of late 2012 / 2013. Have some lols at me wearing them here, how stylish. At least I look deceptively tall.

The real deal (much like disco pants) were really expensive. But either way, good dupes or the real thing, they were the shoe to be seen in. Again, these are still a thing (retailing for a sweet $160. Shit, Jeffrey Campbell!), amazingly.

Those suspender tights

These might have actually kicked off pre-2012. But I was wearing these bad boys for some TIME. I still love my House of Holland, but this was my first intro to it. I remember buying countless pairs from River Island. Usually in the sale, actually. Probably because a lot of people thought they were odd. They were a bit weird weren't they. You'll see twenty year old me at the bottom of this post sporting some snazzy bone print Henry Holland babes.

Look at me wearing them here too. Erm, must have been a warm January!? I love how in this post, while I'm at uni, I referenced 'getting tetchy' in nightclubs. Even young Robyn was quite the party animal...

Shit pics

(I'm talking about my own blog here, so no offence intended. I think some of my old photos are hilarious)

It was still relatively early-ish days for style blogging, so we were all happily snapping away, sussing it out. Screw bokeh from the snazziest lens, amazing composition from a photographer or beautiful city architecture. Hello woodchip wallpaper and dodgy (supposed to be 'arty') angles. A lot of other style bloggers took their photos in these kinds of set-ups too (I'm thinking mum and dad's wonderful lawn too, I did this one a lot). Some bloggers still do. Again, just to reiterate, there's nothing wrong with it. It's personal preference and also the availability of things like money, time and contacts. Finding / funding a photographer... or willing person able to hold a camera... isn't always easy!

When I started getting back into blogging last year, I felt pressure to ensure I had strong photography. The blogging world had shifted a lot. I work with the cracking Anna at Pear and Bear Photography and shoot in Nottingham every few weeks or so. I hate to admit that I felt like that, but I doubt I'm the only one. My supposed-to-be Instagram husband dreads my 'will you take a quick outfit photo or two... or three..maybe four...?' requests. So that's never really been an option to me! And a blogging pal at work, Allie, kindly introed me to Anna.

Despite feeling this pressure to get a more professional look, bloggers have always shared their own photography skills and everyday surroundings on Instagram, Twitter and Youtube. I love this - it adds a personal touch to content, which separates bloggers from mags or the like. We also all learn over time how we want our content to look and feel. The point of a blog is that it's reflective of you, right?! So, you do you. If that's using an iPhone - that's cool. If it's paying for a photographer - equally cool. It's our decision, our content.

Google Friend Connect (remember?!)

This died a death maybe in 2013? But back in the earlier days of blogging, most of us based our success was on our number of Google Friend Connect followers. If you cared about visible numbers, GFC was your metric. It was much like Bloglovin', but actually within Blogger. Lots of bloggers, including me, were gutted when it was killed off because they'd worked damn hard to get people to add them on GFC. It shows just how quickly this internet world chops and changes and that actually, seeking 'numbers' alone can be pointless.

Since this, Instagram has grown into the beast we see before us today - with most bloggers now setting this as their core channel to engage followers, or simply gain a following. I don't think I was even on Instagram until about 6 months after setting up my blog... oh how times change! If you're interested, head over to my Instagram here.

People asking you what the fuck a blog was

I've always liked things (and fashion choices) that are a bit quirky. Rocking up to a lecture in a t-shirt dress emblazoned with bananas and polka dots resulted in some strange looks in 2012. Especially at a uni where flip flops in winter were all the rage. Posting a banana top on my blog, people actually said they liked it.  Here's the aforementioned banana top outfit if you're curious (of course you are). My blogger pals became my little like-minded internet fam.

But admittedly, to this day, I still find it awkward talking about my blog. Back in 2012, it was because blogging wasn't something everyone knew about. Cue awkward conversation: 'I take photos of myself in my bedroom'... 'but I have internet friends who like it too'. Yeah, explaining blogging was not (and still is not) my forte.

Most of the outside world kind of get who we are and what we do today - no thanks to my weird explanations. I've even heard 'did you see this on that girl's Instagram?' or 'oh that blogger wore this!' on the odd occasion over the past couple of years whilst roaming Topshop.

However, some people still think blogging equates to vanity. But you know what? Blogging makes you more vulnerable, rather than more vain. I've definitely learnt a better zero fucks attitude through my blog and the experiences that have come with it. Having your photos taken in the on high-street takes balls. Wearing those weird looking shoes, even though you really like them, might take balls. Just posting an outfit on Insta can take balls. Yet do it because we want to and because we totally have all those balls.

Blogging has also taught me how important it is to support other people in things they do for themselves. Whether it's starting a blog, moving to the other side of the world or choosing a different cereal this week. I got your back.

Enjoy at your leisure and take inspiration as you will... 😂 I still love a good casual outfit, black clothing and wearing ugly things (hey! Just look at the outfit in the body of this post!). And remember, it's all gotta start somewhere. I just started in 2012 rocking green Matalan jeans. THOSE. GREEN. JEANS. THO.

Valentine's Day outfit
Ah, Valentine's Day. Another day where the sun rises in the East and sets in the West and pigs don't fly. How wonderfully pessimistic of me. Really though, Valentine's Day is just another day... isn't it? Well, I've realised this year that maybe it's not.

Lace Up ChokerLip Liner in MulberryTie Front ShirtFlared Frayed Hem Jeans, all c/o New Look, from their Valentine's shop.

I won't be expecting a dozen red roses or a box of chocolates. In fact, I'd rather pass on the flowers (all that watering malarky, erm, I can barely water myself. And SPIKES on something that's meant to show love...? Fifty Shades or what!). A box of chocolates wouldn't go amiss, but I can easily buy and chow down on a big bar of Cadbury's in about 2 minutes flat. Nothing special there mate.

If you read my post about being anything but traditionally girly. I doubt any of this will come as a surprise to you. But, all that said, I still love feel sassy. Especially in what I wear. And I guess Valentine's is as gooder time as ever for feeling sassy. Whether you're with someone, or not.

That being said, I went out for carbs (and lots of them) at lunch today with my boyfriend of almost 8 years, Matt. A kind of 'err shit we'd better do something for Valentine's Day and we've got a voucher from Christmas' situ. Feeling risky, with pizza on the cards, I wore this stunning white shirt from New Look - not the lippy though, as 100% more interested in scoffing my face than touching up lippy. Although, can I just say, New Look lipliners are the bomb. I also have one in Mocha, which is the most amazing cool nude-ish brown. Anyway, I digress...

I felt damn elegant wearing it - considering I was eating pizza with my hands. Apparently that's a no go in a restaurant according to Matt, but oh well. It's obviously the superior means of consumption. My usual environment on a Sunday morning is pretty far removed from this. Think:

  • Spoons, propped up by a chair that's seen better days, and shovelling a large breakfast, that's equally seen better days. But is arguably delicious.
  • Or maybe a sluggish trek around Aldi in joggers, rummaging through boxes of rice, trying to locate the one with quinoa in it.
  • Or even cleaning. Yay, cleaning. Cue the romantic scent of bleach.

Yeah, my weekends get wild. So, today's pre-Valentine's treat has actually been... well, quite nice.

white new look shirtsilver new look boots

In all, I guess even if you're not a massive fan of Valentine's Day, it does provide us with a good excuse, or two. A good excuse for whipping out something fancy to wear - or treating yourself to something new. Although, I really don't need any more excuses buy things for myself! And a good excuse to forget about the crappy day to day crap of life, even if it's just for a couple of hours. And courtesy of a Christmas voucher.

Spend some time doing something just a little bit special with the person(s) you love. Even if the person you love is you - don't throw up, the next sentence softens the nausea caused by this one. Or your needy, stanky dog.

Maybe Valentine's Day isn't all that bad.

Learning to Say No

"No". Sounds blunt, bitchy and a bit mean really. Doesn't it? Well, I think it's powerful, focused and positive (in the most contradictory way possible). But, equally, for me at least, has been difficult thing to say. But here's how I've made turning things down, or even just questioning things, easier for myself.

SHOP THE LOOK

I've not always been someone who's felt comfortable with turning things down, or even feeling like I could question something. I never saw myself as a 'yes' or a 'no' person. I just went along with things. My ability to say no has evolved over the years, growing with my confidence. Something I'm sure I'll write about in a blog post at some point too.

Aside from it being hard to do, saying 'no' can feel like a risk too. I turned down a job offer only a couple of months ago. A really decent job offer. For some reason I wasn't 100% certain about it. I had another opportunity in the pipeline that I knew I'd absolutely say yes to. Turned out, I got offered that job too. And accepted it. I can't imagine doing the other job now. It's easy to say in hindsight, but I'm so glad I took that risk of declining the first opportunity.

As a woman, I think we're hyper-aware of 'no' as a potential route to us looking like a 'bitch', or at least ungrateful. But really, you don't want to close doors - we've got enough closed already, right... and you also want to be true to yourself. This is so relevant when it comes to blogging. Your blog shouldn't stray from being just that - your blog. You'll decline things that aren't right for you, for whatever reason. I use the following method to turn things down, but still keep doors open. This approach suits my personality and works for me.

A shit sandwich. If you haven't heard of it before, it's worth trying. It's a pretty old school method, and you're probably dishing out shit sandwiches every day without even realising it. #scatterthemsarnies. And WOAH... if you think I actually mean poop between some Warburtons, hold up.

Basically, it's a way of giving someone bad news. The shit is the 'no', or the bad news part of the conversation. And those delicious slices of bread either side are the good, or generally positive, bits. I've found it important to keep both the shit and the bread as honest as and non-waffly as possible. This ensures the other person will get your message loud and clear - so the shit isn't thoroughly disguised. I like to think I've got pretty good at these, mainly through my day job in marketing (lols).

Let's go back to blogging as an example. Imagine I've just been asked to take part in a campaign for a fairly large brand. It'd mean a session with my photographer and probably spending a good few hours selecting items and creating, editing and promoting a post. I'm told there's no budget for the campaign. After weighing up the situation, I decide that I should be paid. My response might go something like this:

Slice no1

"I really love the idea and think it'd fit perfectly on my blog." Yum. Bready.

Shit

"However, I do charge £x for a post - this covers... [whatever it actually covers]. So without budget available, I won't be able to take part in this." Bad news.

Slice no 2

"Thanks for asking me to take part and let me know if you do manage to obtain budget. It'd be great if you could keep me in mind for any other suitable upcoming campaigns." Ok, that's not so bad?

I'm giving honest feedback, but also flagging my expectations clearly. I'm also not closing any doors. So, if circumstances change, we can make it work. It might be a 'risk' to turn an 'opportunity' down. But I'm staying true to my personal values. I take this approach through to work and my personal life too, in different instances. It's totally helped me be more assertive and honest (about positives and negatives).

girl power H&M hoodie
Although this method won't work for everything, it's a good starting place if you find turning things down or questioning things tricky. Or even if your want to try to get a better outcome from someone. Sometimes just saying a simple 'no', could be absolutely the right thing. I do it!

On the whole, saying 'no' has helped me take ownership over my life and to express my values. Nos can actually be really positive in provoking change, managing your life and asserting your self-assurance. Who knows, maybe you'll see me in a follow up to Yes Man soon. No Woman. Or Shit Sandwich Woman? Wait I take that back. Ergh. I don't want to think about what this post is going to rank amongst on Google *shudders*.

Do you struggle to say no? Or are you a fellow shit sarnie advocate?

How I Became Confident

Robyn Roxburgh blog

If you'd have known me as a kid, you'd probably be shocked if you met me now. Not just because I was desperate to be an archaeologist (I really liked Time Team...). Needless to say, that didn't go to plan. You'd be stunned because I was an insanely timid child. But look at me now posting my photos all over the bloody internet?!

SHOP THE POST

I have no other way of describing myself as a young'un other than timid. I'm sure my mum would chirp in with a slightly nicer mum-like synonym, i.e. 'sweet', if she could (hi mum). One example to show the extent my shyness - I used to feel physically sick at the thought of saying 'yes Miss' in response to the register at school. I can genuinely remember the awful feeling in my stomach in my year five classroom. It's genuinely making me feel on edge now just talking about it...

UK fashion blog
nottingham blogger

And now, I've got a career, a blog, a degree, opinions that I voice (I know several people who will totally second that 😂). All of which, arguably, take (lady?) balls. So how did I get here?

Well, I'm going to credit my dad with helping me gain a lot of my confidence. My dad and I would have so many same-y conversations, with me utterly petrified at the thought of doing something. Filled with self doubt, wracked with nerves. And he'd give me the very same piece of advice every time. I remember in so many of these scenarios, he'd simply say: 'just pretend to be confident'.

It might sound wrong - like you're pretending to be someone you're not. But I'm living proof that faking confidence can really work. To be honest, it's something I didn't really get until I was about 16 or so. I didn't think I could do it. My dad made it sound so simple. But now, I probably do it every single day in some way.

Chanel style boots
Frill sheer top

It is actually pretty simple though. I fake confidence when I'm prepping for something I'm crapping myself about, or if I'm thrown into a situation. I guess it's kind of CBT-ish really. Also, as a bit of a disclaimer, there's also nothing wrong with being shy, but I know how hard it can make your life!

I'm not saying this is a cure-all, I'm not 100% confident. It probably won't surprise you, given all this, I was diagnosed with anxiety a few years back. I can see now how it showed itself in my childhood in retrospect. But pretending to be confident where I need to has helped me prove to myself that I can be confident. And it's all shown me that I do actually already have confidence. I just need to be proactive in using it more (I have paper bags to hand if anyone is about ready to throw up).

Just a brain spew on a Sunday, but given I mentioned confidence in my last post about saying no more often, I thought I'd follow up with this today! Have any of you guys struggled with your confidence too?

Quarter-Life Crisis: 10 Things On My Mind

Robyn Mayday blogger
Twenty-five. It's kinda nice to meet you after all these years. The big pre-thirty milestone. An arguably meaningless milestone at that. Oh and do you like how I've tied my jumper into this post 😏? Thought so.

Anyway, I've totally hit a quarter-life crisis. Not just in relation to one thing. Oh no. We're talking multiple (ok, maybe ten) moments of questioning my quarter-of-a-century life. So let's get right into it!

SHOP MY OUTFIT

1) Envying my dogs chilled-as-fuck lifestyle.

Snoozing, pulling needy faces and eating sausages all day must be hard. Oh, and of course, your insurance has doubled this year. You little prick.

2) Two words: career anxiety.

What should my career be like right now? Am I doing ok? Will I really be doing this until 2060?! I had to check my state pension age then, which has now made me feel sick. It'll apparently be 68 for me. Congratulations to the government for making me want to vom.

UK fashion blogger

3) I'm approaching thirty.

I'm sure that means something big and special should happen. But I'll probably still be sat on my sofa in my dressing gown at 1pm on a Sunday, writing a quarter-life crisis blog post with my dog farting on me in five years time. Definitely not big or special.

4) I'm officially OLD at music.

I swear, about ten years ago, discovering new music was so me. But I couldn't be further from that now. I was singing 1999 Britney whilst making pancakes this morning. Christ, I really am getting old. If you now feel like listening to a bit of Britters, here's the tune I was singing. Enjoy.

Converse with smart trousers

5) And back to Britney, her lyrics have never been so relevant to my life.

"Not a girl, not yet a woman". I may or may not have listened to this song alone, weeping and incidently howling "TELL ME WHAT I AM BRITNEY. PLEASE."

6) How does budgeting work again?

Fortunately, I've had a stable income for a good few years. But I still can't suss out when to stop shopping on ASOS. I'm probably known as 'parcel girl' at work. The guy on the post desk definitely hates me.

british style blogger

7) I'm a norm with Instagram struggles.

AKA a plain old normal human, trying to make my life look exciting. Most of my weekends are spent cleaning or doing life admin. No one wants to see that kinda content. Let's circle back to that image of me in my dressing gown, a little bit sweaty from hoovering actually (TMI), sat next to a dog with gas whilst typing this. FAB-U-LOUS.

8) What are these scary articles about your skin after twenty-five?!

Read, 'your youthful skin will now go to shit'. Thank you life. And why did the man in Space NK reiterate this to me when I told him it was nearly my 25th birthday? Get away from me with your fear mongering, you cruel but well-highlighted man. I'm not ready for this.

UK style blog

9) Is it ok that getting married isn't a priority for me?

I've mentioned this before, but let me list just a few of things: stress, saving, planning. All things I really would rather avoid where possible. That would mean no more midnight online shops that make me feel sick upon reflection the morning after. I'm not down with that. Because I secretly love it. But FYI, I'm totally up for the cake.

10) Timehop things on Facebook become torturous.

'6 years ago today'... up pops a photo of you and your uni flatmates eating donuts in pyjamas at 3pm on a Tuesday, whilst planning a very deep-fried heavy Chinese later that evening. And watching at least 6 hours straight of Friends. Urgh. Second degree anyone...?

I probably have another five of these in the bag, but I think that's enough of my anxious and ageing brain for one blog post. I'd love to know about your quarter-life crisis too, so we can wallow in our strange concerns and fears together 👍

Don't Be A Dick About Designer Bags

I'll admit, seeing a 20/30-something with a designer bag is definitely not the norm (at least where I live, hence this silver beauty from ASOS). And I'll also confess to yelling 'HOLY SHIT' when, out of curiosity, I've googled the price of some seriously dreamy pieces. These gorgeous designer creations have become a familiar sight on my social media feeds over the years, with many influencers repping arm-candy from the likes of Gucci, Chanel and YSL. *Cue me furiously double tapping 99% of these 'grams*. But why are some people a bit dick-ish about seeing them on their social feeds?

Now, regardless of age, I think we'd all agree that having a designer handbag is by no means a given. You are not weird if you don't own one. But you're in a slight majority if you do. This report (albeit, from back in 2014) shows that most people buy bags from high street shops. Although 55% of the respondents in that study had bought a 'high-end' bag before, remember - this study covers 18-64 year-olds. Most of you reading this will probably be 18-34 (cheers Google Analytics). And I'd like to think I'd have a few before I pop my clogs, as an admirer of designer bags. That or maybe 10 dogs. I'll happily be buried with whatever I end up with - bags or dogs. Moving swiftly on...

Anyway, enough of the numbers. I've seen some, arguably, pretty weird and rude tweets lately re bloggers and designer bags. Some about blogger once loved, now becoming 'unrelatable' because of a bag. One assuming their 'daddy' bought it for them, or they must have 'been sent it' and not declaring. I want to cover off these two points specifically: relatability and the assumption that they couldn't possibly be self-funded.

One word for you: magazines. Remember those?! I used to pick up various magazines when I was younger (pre-blogger days!). From Glamour to Cosmo, Grazia to Elle (I didn't do Vogue!). They all used to cover premium fashion to varying extents, from what I can remember. Aged 16, I used to love flicking through the gorgeous photography, or glancing over what the celebs were dressed in. Sometimes high-street alternatives would be listed, as you'll see on blogs today. But even if they weren't, I took something from those pages: inspiration.

And for me, today, these influencers with their snazzy bags aren't unrelatable. I can relate to all the influencers I follow in some way: their personalities, their style, their realness. That's why I follow them. So even if designer bags were way out of my reach (will address this in the next paragraph), I'm pretty confident in saying I wouldn't give a shit. I follow people for how they come across and maybe their ideas, quirks and creativity, rather than purely the brands they wear.

Personally, I don't object to content that I'd deem unrelatable to my life. But if it's a problem on your feed - just unfollowYou are in control. If you don't like this post, you can unfollow me. I wouldn't be offended - we just have different opinions. I'll also put it out there that if I wanted to save for a designer bag for a few months, I could afford one. I'd need to avoid ASOS though (... baby, I got a LOT of time for you) and other things I'm saving for would have to go out the window. So for me, it's not completely unrelatable to see someone I follow wearing a fine-ass bag. Things like snazzy cars are way out of my league. However, I still don't object to them on my feed!

Daddy's money?

Ok, think: why would it matter if it is? And why should anyone need to declare it? I confess - this one has been way more difficult for me to come to terms with over the years. Some people are just born more fortunate. They might have been wearing Chanel on their feet since 1992.  And you can't expect someone to show the gratitude they may have for their privilidged life through an Instagram feed in every single post.

Going to a uni where some people were insanely well-off, I used to be jealous. Jealous of girls who shopped in All Saints every couple of weeks, wore Louboutins on a night out, or rocked up to lectures with a YSL tote. I felt a bit hard done by. Working in John Lewis cleaning scone crumbs off tables every Saturday, whilst wearing a highly attractive apron and comfort shoes (strong look) - all to shop in New Look.

Unfortunately, you have to terms with the fact that that's life. Some people are just very fortunate. Equally, a lot of us work our little-fucking-socks-off to obtain some nice things. Because of this, I've now bought a house, a dog and have occasional splurges (sorry Mum). But it's not been easy to get to a stage where I earn enough to afford this. Some of it might have been luck, but I'd like to think a lot of it has been dedication in striving toward my version of success.

I've heard a few bloggers talk about how they've saved for months to buy an incredible bag. That takes a lot of willpower (props to you gurl) and, I'd expect, hard work to earn that money in the first place. We're all fortunate to be able to access the bloody internet, for one... or to buy new clothes at all. But with the money we do have, we should spend our dollar however we want.

Of course, designers or retailers will gift influencers with some incredible pieces sometimes. But many of these bloggers spend hours creating incredible content for us to consume and enjoy - week in, week out. So who are we to resent them for receiving a gift from a brand? Or being given the opportunity to work with a label? As long as it's declared as a gift where appropriate, more power to them.

SHOP MY OUTFIT

This has gone on longer than anticipated (as usual!). However, I guess what I really mean is... well, don't be a dick about designer handbags. Chanel and Gucci may not be on your shopping list. You may simply choose not to buy into designer goods. But there's no reason to slate or shame someone publically for owning a high-end bag. And if you don't want to see them on your feed?

Turns out I've been living under a rock... an Instagram-shaped rock. 'Bloggers', 'influencers' and generally all sorts of people are frequently using bots on Instagram - automated tools developed to gain you followers and likes. Here's how I found out that some of the 'grammers I followed were using bots, and why this tactic makes me feel so uncomfortable. SHOP MY OUTFIT !function(d,s,id){

Why it's Ok to Feel Fierce

All too often, we shy away from seeing the good in ourselves. "I love your outfit today!" - is regularly shrugged off with "oh it's just Primark". Or "that was such a kind thing you did" followed up with a casual "ah it was nothing...". It seems many of us just aren't very good at taking a compliment. Myself included. And we're also pretty shit at recognising amazing things about ourselves.
